7 Foods To Fuel Your Brain

Feel run down? Not on top form? Woozy, dozy, stressed – or all of the above?

It could be your diet.

The typical student pays little attention to what they eat. While fast food and microwave meals are quick and easy options, they have little nutritional value. Give your brain a boost with these 7 foods instead.

Eggs

Ah! The good old versatile egg. Whether boiled, poached or scrambled (forget fried for now), eggs are filled with loads of the good stuff including amino acids, good fats, vitamins and minerals.

Fish

Bursting with omega-3 fatty acids, add oily fish to your diet at least twice a week. This includes salmon, trout, sardines, mackerel, herring, anchovies and fresh tuna. Fresh fish is ideal but tinned will do the job.

Nuts

All types of nuts are packed with protein, vitamins and minerals but the walnut provides the most brain benefits. A study on adults found that eating walnuts regularly improved reaction time, learning and memory recall. So munch on a handful a day and you’ll be on your way.

Avocado

Unlike other fruits, avocados are 75% monounsaturated fats. These support the production of acetylcholine, the memory and learning brain chemical. You can spread avocado on your toast, have it as a side with your lunch or even eat it on its own. Yum.

Dark chocolate

Any chocolate is good chocolate right? Dark chocolate is high in neuroprotective flavonoids which promote brain plasticity and help brain cells live longer. Go for dark chocolate that says 70% or higher on the label; this is the total percentage of everything derived from the cocoa bean, and means it’s got plenty of nutritional punch. The higher the percentage is the more health and brain benefits your chocolate will provide. If you find 70% too bitter, start with 54% and work your way up.

Blueberries

A handful of these bad boys incorporated into you daily diet is a wise move. They are known for being one of the highest antioxidant-rich foods and are filled with vitamin C, K and fiber. You can sprinkle them on your cereal, mix them with yoghurt or enjoy them on their own.

Oats

You can’t beat a bowl of nutritious oats for brekkie. Oatmeal is a wholegrain which gives your brain and body a steady stream of energy throughout the day. A bowl of this first thing in the morning will set you up for the day thanks to all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

It’s safe to say that your brain is your most valuable organ. Don’t be callous; give your tools the care they require, and eat your way to academic success!
