4 Tips on Finding a Job After Your Gap-Year Travels

You’re back from your gap-year sun kissed, dishevelled and still buzzing off the adventures you had abroad.
However, you’re also totally broke, adjusting to the grey drizzle of English weather, and coming to terms with the fact pretty much everything is the same as when you left.
It’s high-time to join the “real world” and get a job. But don’t despair, it doesn’t have to be as hard and draining as it sounds. Here’s how:
Think about what you want to do
The good thing about undergoing a gap year is that it gives you breathing space and time to think. It helps you consider what type of job you want to go into, or at least the type of lifestyle you want.
If you’re still stuck – make a list of the things you like or want from a job. This could include skills you want to use or build on (for example, writing or analytical skills) or perks you would like to have (for example, flexi-time, or remote working).
Browse job boards and careers advice websites (such as our job listings!) for inspiration and advice on different careers. Speak to lecturers, careers advisers or friends and family for advice on what the next options are.
Put your gap-year on your CV
The gap on your CV doesn’t have to be there – mention your year abroad. The fact you underwent a gap year abroad shows you have confidence, adaptability and cultural awareness – all good traits to bring to your next role.
If you worked or volunteered abroad, that’s even better as it showed you gained work experience. But even just travelling around shows you are curious about the world and able to be independent – great skills for any CV. It is likely your gap year would be met with intrigue by any employer.
Network
Create a LinkedIn profile or update your existing one. Ensure your profile says that you are open to opportunities. Send your CV to recruiters and follow up with a phone call where you can let them know you’re searching for roles and what kind of thing you’re interested in.
Ask friends and family if they know of anyone hiring and spread the word that you are back in town and searching for a job.
Learn new skills
You have free days ahead of you, with very few obligations! (Unless you happen to be renting). It’s the perfect time to pick up new skills for your CV.
Using resources such as Lynda.com allows you to learn new technical programmes, code academy is great for learning to code and YouTube has many tutorials at your hands for free.
but don’t forget to enjoy yourself and re-connect with friends/ family
It is important not to let job searching stress you out too much or get you down. Remain patient and stay positive. Reconnect with friends and family and enjoy yourself, which will help you ease back into normal life again.
