How To Combat The Post-Uni Blues

For many, uni represents the best few years of your life. One minute you’re walking into your first ever lecture; next you’re stood there in your cap and gown.

But what happens once the glory days are well and truly over?

You’re finally out of education and feeling sad that it’s over is normal. As a shiny new graduate, getting your dream job will probably be your main focus. But what to do in the meantime? How do you beat them post-uni blues?

Focus on the positives

The feeling of loss after leaving uni can be all-consuming. We feel ya; you’ve lost a part of your life – childhood – to which you can never return.

Still, look on the bright side. You’re moving onto the next stage. You went to uni with the intention of getting a degree and look! You did it!

Create a new routine

As a student, your routine was probably all over the shop – but you still kind of had one. Now you’re jobless, lectureless and timetable-less.

Create a new routine to help keep your mind busy. Make sure you put a few hours a day into job hunting and CV writing. Maybe you could join your local gym or start taking classes in something new.

Last but not least, make time for friends and family. Actively make the effort to meet up. These are the people you’ll be thankful for in a year’s time.

Take a break from the new routine

Job hunting? You don’t have to go in all guns blazing. Make a schedule, set daily goals and take the rest of the time to live a little.

Don’t compare yourself to others

Everyone is different. If your mate landed a job straight out of uni, that’s great. It doesn’t mean you’re less great for waiting a little longer to enter work.

Look at the bigger picture. You’ve worked hard to get a degree, and you’ll soon be working hard for the rest of your life – hopefully in something you love. Your time will come. But that time will be yours, nobody else’s.

It’s your path. Walk it.

Learn to handle rejection

So you’ve applied for 100 jobs, got 10 rejection emails and nothing from the rest? It happens to all of us.

Even the smartest and talented people got rejected countless times before they got anywhere in life. I’m talking the big-shots: Albert Einstein, Oprah Winfrey, Walt Disney… Don’t let rejection consume you. Keep putting in the hard word and you will see results.

Graduation is a huge milestone, not just in your education but also in your personal development. Give yourself time to adjust and, if the feeling of sadness and depression is taking over your everyday life, then seek help. Above all, know that you’re not alone – and, as with all things, this too shall pass. In three years you’ll be gainfully employed, looking down the barrel of countless opportunities and happily on your way to a successful career.
