4 Industries Where Interning Is Important

Internships are a great way to get your foot in the door of your chosen career industry. They can lead to a full-time job, however, it does all depend on the industry itself. Let’s take a look at four industries where interning is important, or at least having some sort of relevant experience, in order to attract employers…

Publishing/Media

The media and publishing sectors are notoriously hard to get into. This industry incorporates: magazines, books, web publishing, PR, TV and Radio.

Getting hands-on experience is essential for getting that first job in this industry. An internship is a perfect way to showcase your talents and make contacts. The more work experience you can add into your portfolio the better!

Fashion

Internships in the fashion industry are probably not as glamorous as they sound but they’re a good way to get in.

Similar to the publishing/media industry as a fashion intern, the experience and contacts you gain is what makes the internships the most valuable.

Competition is fierce in this industry which is why interning somewhere will help you gain inside knowledge.

There are many different roles within the fashion industry, such as fashion designer, fashion journalist and merchandiser. An internship in this field will help you get noticed and land you a job after graduation.

Music

This is known to be a highly competitive business and an internship is a good way to break in. The primary career paths in music consist of performing (such as singing or playing an instrument), choreographing or conducting. There are many technical roles, such as being a sound engineer, or producer.

There’s also the business side, such as being a, manager, talent scout or producer. Additinally, there is the educational and therapeutic route where you go into being a music teacher, voice therapist or music therapist.

Whichever route you’re thinking of taking, having the backing of an internship will prove to be worthwhile. Learning the ropes from more experienced professionals will not only help you hone your own skills but also help you decide which career path you want to take.

Performing Arts

Whether you want to work backstage, onstage or somewhere in between, internships are a great way to explore your options. An internship provides you with the basic understanding of your chosen performing arts field. This will act as a stepping-stone for the jobs you’ll apply for in the future.

In most industries, at the start of your career you may have to undertake some unpaid work. It’s best that you try gain as much experience as possible while at uni so that once you graduate you can be taken seriously for paid roles.

There’s no denying that internships give you a taste of what it would be like working in the real world. While you’re at uni internships can give you valuable insight that will help you decide if the particular career is the one for you or not. If it’s not then at least you know sooner rather than later and you can look into other industries where you can use your skills.
